Today you and I will be given 86,400 seconds. It took me 11.73 of those seconds to type that last sentence. That’s the number of seconds that make up a day. 24 hours, 1,440 minutes or 86,400 seconds to live.
Today I have a long list of to do’s. Besides my day job which I will spend 8 or more hours at today, I will need to find time to work on some VillageHouston projects, pack and prep for Immersion (I AM BEYOND EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!) and clean my apartment (no one likes to leave for a week and come back to dirty sheets and dishes in the dishwasher).
Those are the tasks that must be accomplished today.
Yet, as I write out my to do list I am struck with the reality that today I will be given 86,400 seconds. It seems like a lot but a second flies by in the blink of an eye and really so do our days.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog about paying attention to the Seconds and Seasons that we find ourselves in. I made the observation that we are not promised the next second or the next season and then I asked the question: What will you do with the second and the season you are given today?
To answer this question in our lives I propose that we utilize a filter and that filter is the question WHY.
Why answers purpose. Why gets at the reason behind a mood shift, a low day or a joyful day. Why brings clarity.
As leaders if we want to steward our seconds and seasons well we need to know WHY we are doing something.
When was the last time you evaluated not only your personal commitments but those of your ministry?
Why do we spend time, treasure and talents on this program or that project?
Why are all of my Saturdays spent in meetings?
Why don’t I have time to have dinner with my spouse or family?
As leaders, who make a lot of stewarding choices, we must keep the WHY in front of us. Our people, our ministries and our families depend on us to model stewardship of time, treasures and talents. We must pay close attention to the reason and purpose behind what we are doing.
Leaders, I challenge you, sit down today or sometime this week and seek God about the WHY. The big WHY and the smaller why’s. Ask him what he wants you spending your seconds and seasons on and then make changes.
“For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which he prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
We have been given such a beautiful invitation into ministry and mission, let’s know the “WHY” of life and filter the stewardship of our seconds and seasons through that purpose.
